I woke up this morning with the news of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal. Headlines across various news media covered the deadly quake. The disaster struck the densely populated Kathmandu City which is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. Latest updates report over 1000 dead, thosands of people relocated and possibly rise of death toll as numbers come in from far-flung areas. The powerful quake that shook the country today (April 25, 2015) not only took away lives, but it collapsed modern houses, centuries old temples as well as triggering a landslide on the slopes of Mount Everest. Deaths and damages were also reported in India, Tibet and Bangladesh following the shaken Nepal.

I happen to have a good friend named Manju who returned to Nepal two years ago after her husband completed his PhD in Trondheim, Norway. I immediately had a sense of urgency to contact her but all I had was an email address. I hope to get a reply as soon as possible to easen my worry.

My thoughts and prayers goes to all affected by the destructive earthquake as well as the whole country of Nepal while they battle to save more lives. I also hope foreign aid and response centers across the world will pour out their love and care to those who need it most right now.

This earthquake incident reminds all of us that life is short and unexpected. When mother nature strikes, no one can escape. We can only hope for less casualties and successful recovery of affected lives.
